Location

The Old Town covers an area of almost 4 km² in the centre of Magdeburg. With a population of 16,731 (as of 2019), it impresses not only with its architectural diversity – ranging from industrial-style buildings to historic old buildings – but above all with its location. Whether it’s the railway station, Domplatz, the theatre, a gym or a restaurant – you can reach all the key attractions in just a few minutes on foot or by bike. Countless shops, leisure facilities and educational institutions characterise Magdeburg’s Old Town. In the northern part of the district and around Universitätsplatz, you’ll find modern residential and commercial buildings, as well as the opera house. In the centre of the Old Town, you’ll find plenty of shops, the town hall and the Hundertwasser House. Life in the Old Town revolves mainly around the River Elbe, where you can enjoy a lovely stroll along the Petriförder Ufer. In the south of the district, around Hasselbachplatz – also known as ‘Hassel’ – there is a large area of historic buildings featuring beautiful houses from Magdeburg’s Gründerzeit era. The Old Town therefore offers flats to suit a variety of tastes and budgets. Thanks to its central location and proximity to pubs, nightclubs and restaurants, the district is a popular place to live amongst younger DSW members. But older residents also appreciate the district for its idyllic banks of the Elbe and good infrastructure: the short distances can easily be covered on foot or by bike. Thanks to its central location, medical facilities in Magdeburg’s Old Town are also within easy reach, along with doctors’ surgeries, pharmacies, shopping facilities, public transport links, restaurants and bars, schools and nurseries – and it’s very green.
